Blue Whale

Balaenoptera musculus

The blue whale does not belong to any of the 36 hotspots, all of which are centred on land areas. For this reason, it was not on my list of animals and plants, nor was it going to be. But my friend Carolina Gómez of CREA CON IMPACTO advised me to paint an animal that could be more easily associated with conservation goals. I have to say that I am very happy with the result.

Since the whale is not endemic to any particular country, and in fact, it inhabits all oceans except the Arctic, I thought that cultural associations should be related to something that unites all of us, and that something is the oceans. When I think of the oceans, I think of Ingozini’s motto: Earth is the only planet in the known universe that harbours large masses of liquid water on its surface. That makes life possible. Maybe there is life in other corners of the universe, but we don’t know, and if there is, it will surely be a very different kind of life than on Earth.
