Why watercolour?

I chose to paint with watercolour because it is a relatively easy medium to use, yet allows for more intricate and detailed painting than pencil or pastel. The paint is less toxic than others such as oil and acrylics, and so it makes environmental sense. I also wanted to paint by hand rather than using digital media.

But I also think that using watercolour has a symbolic element that links painting with nature. Earth is the only planet that contains large bodies of liquid water on its surface in the known universe, and it is therefore the only planet that can harbour life, at least life as we know it. Perhaps there is life in other corners of the universe, but so far we have not found it, and if there were, it would surely be life very different from how it exists on Earth. It is this unique quality that encouraged me to represent the animal and plant species that exist on Earth.
