King Protea
Protea cyranoides
The King Protea is the national flower of South Africa. It represents the ecosystem called fynbos, which is endemic to the country. Clint Eastwood’s film Invictus tells the story of the victory of the South African national rugby team as a symbol of unity of the post-apartheid nation. A group of black people want to change the name of the team, the Springboks, related to white South Africa and apartheid to «the Proteas», but Mandela opposes this because what what he wants is national reconciliation, not revenge.
This hotspot is found in the South African provinces of the Northern Cape, the Eastern Cape, and the Western Cape, where Cape Town is located. The region has a Mediterranean climate like the one in southern Europe. However, the hotspot’s species are very different.
