Blue-bearded Helmetcrest
Oxypogon cyanolaemus
The Tropical Andes is the most diverse hotspot in the world. It was also the first to be catalogued. It covers the countries of Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, and Bolivia. The Helmetcrest is endemic to a small area of Colombia.
I chose a species from Colombia for two reasons. The first is that Colombia is the country with the greatest diversity of birds in the world. The second is that I decided to mix the Helmetcrest with what I know of Colombian culture, or at least, with something very close to me from Colombian culture. The difficulty of drawing hot spots outside the Mediterranean and Africa is that they are in countries I have not visited and do not know. For Colombia, and for the rest of the American continent, I have decided to entrust myself to Spanish literature.
